Sheffield’s Off the Shelf festival of Words is now in its 26th year and well established as one of the most exciting events in the region’s cultural calendar and one of the largest literary festivals in the UK.   The festival continues to grow in size, prestige and popularity and is recognised by Arts Council England as one of the key literary events in the region.  In an exciting new development, in 2017 Off the Shelf will be managed by both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.  This ground breaking partnership will help the festival to reach new audiences and grow its student following, to develop, thrive and become even more successful going forward.  

The festival enjoys an excellent reputation and is able to attract some of the best known names in literature and the media to Sheffield each year. Previous festivals have included appearances by Levison Wood, Kate Adie, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, David Mitchell, Rose Tremain, Sarah Waters, Nick Hornby, Simon Armitage, Benjamin Zephaniah, Tony Robinson, Sandi Toksvig, Hilary Mantel, John Pilger,The Hairy Bikers, David Peace, Michael Frayn, Antonia Fraser, Jamie Oliver, Owen Jones, Hilary Mantel, Ian Rankin, Jamie Oliver and Stephen Fry to name just a few.

Each year the festival attracts around 29,000 people.  A further estimated 150,000 people view festival exhibitions and digital work.  We attract excellent audiences with many of our events selling out.  The festival takes place in over 80 venues city wide including Crucible Theatre, Showroom Cinema, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Sheffield Student's Union and community libraries.  

The festival's national profile continues to grow.  In 2016 the festival achieved 254 pieces of press coverage with an estimated total average of £2.3m and an estimated total reach 16 - 18 million including:
