The political Left in Britain rose out of the Industrial Revolution as the working classes emerged as the leading force in the call for social change. Their contributions extended widely to political representation, the birth of the Labour Party, women’s suffrage, adult education and Britain’s literary culture. Drawing on new material and extensive research, historian Geoff Andrews explores the ideas of leading thinkers, writers, educationalists, trade unionists and politicians.

Dr Geoff Andrews is a Senior Lecturer In Politics at the Open University. His books include The Shadow Man and Agent Moliere: the Life of John Cairncross, the Fifth Man of the Cambridge Spy Circle.
