A look at Sheffield’s history with local historian David Templeman. Paradise Square is a gem of Georgian architecture with fascinating stories to tell from Dragoons charging Chartist rioters to John Wesley preaching to his largest ever weekday congregation. Broom Hall manor house dates from 1498 abd in 1791 a mob protesting the Enclosure Act set fire to the property – a reminder of the social tensions gripping Sheffield at the time. Poet and activist Ebeneezer Elliott, the Corn Law Rhymer, fought against the Corn Laws which were driving the poor to starvation. He lived long enough to see them repealed. A statue of Elliott occupied a prime position at the top of Angel Street facing up the High Street for many decades during the Victorian era.
